THE FIRST FACILITY - PEDRO VICENTE MALDONADO

Andean Health & Development has been working in Pedro Vicente Maldonado (PVM) since 1997. After completing a health assessment of the area, it was discovered that very few health services existed and that Hospital services were desperately needed. AHD built a 15 bed hospital with all the typical services of a rural hospital with donations from the USA along with the help of the local government.

In December, 2000, the doors to the hospital in PVM were opened amid much fanfare and anticipation. (See PVM Grand Opening) The hospital’s bright yellow exterior invited locals to visit. The staff’s friendly demeanor and quality health care made an impact almost immediately.

More than 75,000 patients from many areas of the country have been treated during the hospital’s first 8 years.

Before the hospital opened in PVM, patients needing surgery would often wait until the last minute before they traveled to Quito. Some died in transit. Local healthcare in rural Ecuador saves lives.
